Celebrate Success

As we get closer to the end of the year, it is a great time to reflect on what we have achieved in the past year. Whether or not we have specific goals, we all achieve far more than we give ourselves credit for.
Time does not stand still. Things change all the time and if we are not moving forward in one way or another, we are left resisting change and progress. You may surprise yourself when you stop to think about how far you have come in the past year. All those small steps you have taken may not seem so significant at the time but as you look back you can see just how your situation has changed since 12 months ago.
Even when we face very difficult situations - which happen to all of us at some point, these can be huge learning opportunities or help us look at life with a completely different perspective.
The new year is a time for 'resolutions' - many of which we are so full of determination for but which fall by the wayside by the end of January. In the new year, Total Wellbeing Resources will be focusing on helping you to take your wish list and turn them into powerful goals for the year.

The 80 20 principle

...better known as the 80-20 rule, is based on the fact that 80% of what we achieve well is from 20% of what we do. This principle is more commonly applied to business efficiency but can be applied just as easily to any aspect of our day to day lives.

Successful people achieve more by concentrating on the 20% that matters. This means that we can eradicate up to 80% of activity during our daily routine that does not contribute towards our success by starting to do less. If you look at most successful people in the workplace, they are not the ones running around chasing their tail, staying all hours and making sure everyone else around them knows exactly how much they have to do. These people are successful because they concentrate on what matters. People who are always 'busy' are not necessarily effective. We often create a lot of work for ourselves because we don't stop to focus on what’s important.

The same is true about the rest of your life. Consider the things you do each day and think carefully about whether they need to be done or are adding any value to your life. If things are adding no value whatsoever, think about why you still do them? Maybe it's just a habit or maybe it seems important on the surface but is not really benefiting you or anyone else when you take a closer look? The best question to ask yourself is 'what is the positive or negative impact on myself or others if I stop doing this task / activity?' If the answer is 'none' then it is adding no value whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong - sometimes we all enjoy doing tasks or activites that don't seem to produce any real significant benefits but there is a benefit nonetheless and that is the fact that we are enjoying doing it! Spending time doing things we enjoy, no matter how trivial they may seem is always a benefit!

Don't underestimate the power that the awareness of the 80-20 rule can have on your life. Anyone who cuts out everything that has no benefit is one hellava disciplined person but if freeing up just some of your time each day from the mundane and insignificant means you can spend more of your time on the things that will benefit you and those around you then it is well worth considering!

Self Esteem for Women

Have you ever questioned whether this is all there is to life? Have you mastered your relationships but your finances are a mess? Do you have an amazing career, but your love life has gone to the dogs? Are you financially independent, but lacking the energy to even enjoy it? Do you just know deep down that there must be something more?

You're human and life does go off track. As a woman, you are 'hard wired' to care so much for your family and loved ones, that it can often be easy to let your own life slide as a result. Then you may wake up some day and realise that you've sacrificed so much... too much. Well now it's time to turn it around! Your life can absolutely be the amazing adventure you want it to be, and it should be.

Food Advice - Who do we trust?

There has been a big focus in the UK news this week about people no longer trusting the advice we are given about our food / alcohol consumption and that less of us are now turning to our GP or Nutritionists for advice on healthy eating.

The latest this week is that too much red meat and alcohol is bad for our health - what a surprise - like we didn't know that already! We know that most things in very large quantities aren't really that good for us and although we all over indulge from time to time, most of us know that a bit of common sense and a well balanced diet is probably the way to go and nobody needs to tell us that!

What people are tired of is the conflicting advice because the 'experts' cannot seem to decide between them what is and isn't good for us. One week a food causes cancer and the next it is full of health giving vitamins and anti-oxidants - is it any wonder we can't trust what we are being told anymore?

It is not a coincidence that the obesity crisis is partly because of all of this conflicting advice which doesn't just stop at what is good or bad for us but also is clearly seen between the pages of every diet book and magazine out there. People are so confused and so taken in by the years of being told what to do that they simply do not know how to trust their own instincts and needs anymore.

It's time to go back to basics. Our bodies know what they need at any given time and if we allow ourselves to trust our own instincts about what is and isn't good for our bodies, then we are on the right track. We need to get back into the driving seat and start making our own choices about our health.

There is nothing wrong with opting for food choices with less chemicals or artificial additives as lets face it, real food tastes so much better, but it's high time that we stopped listening to all the rubbish and put our health first by making balance, moderation and choice our priority instead!
