Having found out I was intolerant to soy products a few years ago, I have done a good job on removing most of it from my diet but I have always found it hard to explain why I can eat the odd meal containing soy sauce with absolutely minimum after effects and yet feel so bad after eating foods that contain soy based products.

Can vitamin D help weight loss?

This week, I came across an interesting article in Woman and Home magazine about the important role of vitamin D in our diets.  I work in an office environment and get very little time out in sunlight - in the winter this gets even worse.  Many of us just don't get the level of sunlight needed to produce enough vitamin D so eating a diet high in vitamin D or supplementing is a good alternative.

Many cultures are getting severely deficient in this vitamin and getting enough from the sun means direct exposure to sunlight for 15 minutes each day - fairly easy in the summer but very difficult in many northern hemisphere countries in the winter months.  In addition, the advice we get about using sunscreen is a great one but it also means we are getting even less vitamin D absorption.

Research also shows that many obese people are deficient so studies suggest that increasing your intake along with getting enough calcium may help.  Other health benefits include:

• Increased immunity
• Protection against cancer
• Good bone health
• Mood improvement
• Better brain function
• Help with POCS and fertility

It still saddens me that the diet industry still finds very low calorie dangerous diets acceptable and what's worse, that women and men everywhere are still so misinformed.  The body simply will not sustain any long term weight loss on such low calorie diets and furthermore, they damage our metabolism?

Having come out of the end of many years of diet brainwashing, I can see why people would be attracted to this promise of quick results but it just goes against everything our bodies are biologically designed to do.  Drastic, extreme low calorie dieting does nothing more than shift water weight, force the body to burn lean muscle, lower the metabolism, cause depression and as this article demonstrates, cause serious health problems and even death.

Our bodies need calories to survive - just because eating too many calories can add weight, it is not the case that having too few will get rid of the weight effectively.  Eating a good supportive, nutritious diet and increasing lean muscle through exercise is the only long term way to support your metabolism and have enough energy to live a healthy life.

So next time you are tempted by the quick fix, remember how precious your health really is.
