Live a Happy Life...

Can You Really Think Yourself Happy? Believe it or not, it is within your power to create positive thoughts allowing you to accomplish anything you set out to do in spite of the obstacles and challenges that life presents. Can you really think yourself happy? The answer is a qualified yes.

Here are the ways in which positive thoughts can help you accomplish many things in life. Positive thoughts produce positive results. We can either bemoan our situation, or change it. We can be negative about an event or enthusiastic. President Lincoln once said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” If you really want to think yourself happy, then make up your mind to do so.

It may be difficult to think happy when the world does not always seem like a happy place but if we all choose to view life differently and focus on the positive instead of dwelling on the negative then we could make a difference - if not in the world, definately in our own lives and for those around us. One person, one idea, one positive thought can change a society! Here are just some ways to help you focus on the positive:

  • Seek out positive people to associate with.
  • Expose yourself to all the wonderful books, music and movies available.
  • Show kindness and respect towards others.
  • Live life as if every day is your last.
  • Use positive reinforcement wherever and whenever you can.
  • Use visualization methods to view the positive aspects of life.
  • Speak in a positive tone.
  • Rid your mind of negative thinking with yoga and exercise.
  • Let your expectations reflect your positive attitude.
  • Allow peace of mind to envelop you.
  • Become your own best friend.

Happiness is not a genetic trait we are born with or without, it is a choice that we make. It is up to us to maintain it, share it, and build our lives around it. Think happy often enough and you can live a happy life.

Exercise – A Natural Insomnia Cure

We all know that exercise that can help you lose weight and get more energy, but what about helping you sleep?  Studies have shown that people, particularly women, who regularly exercise during the day, sleep longer and better at night.  So, before you reach for the sleeping pills why not try going for a run, taking a trip to the gym, or signing up for a yoga class.

Many people have trouble sleeping because they are overly stressed.  The worst part about this is that sleep deprivation can increase your cortisol levels, which makes you feel more stressed.  It can also make you irritable and less able to deal with stressful situations.  This is why most insomniacs have increased levels of stress hormones.  While exercise makes these hormones rise initially, after several hours the levels fall.  These hormones levels actually become lower than before you exercised and lower than they would be if you hadn’t worked out.  Regular exercise can end the vicious sleep-stress cycle once and for all.

Most insomniacs simply can’t clear their mind of their problems when they lay down to bed.  The stresses of the day run repeatedly through their minds instead of relaxing.  Exercise can be a time to escape the stressors around you and figure out solutions to your problems.  If you figured out what to do about your latest work crisis during your morning run, you don’t have to stress over it at bedtime.  This leaves your brain free to sleep.

Exercising also makes you need sleep more.  The more you work your muscles, the more they need to regenerate through sleep.  While you may think this just going to make you more tired when you can’t sleep, it will probably actually help you have a deeper, more restful sleep.  Even if you can’t sleep more, you’ll sleep better and be more rested and energized in the morning.

An important part of using exercise to cure insomnia is timing.  As I already mentioned, exercise produces chemicals in your brain that make you feel more awake and energized.  This is why it’s not a good idea to exercise before bedtime, but how close is too close?  It is generally recommended that you exercise more than four hours before you sleep; however, you may find you need a longer rest period.  If you find you’re not sleepy, start pushing your exercise earlier gradually till you find a good time.  The best time to exercise is in the morning, and this will make you feel more energized all day long.

If you absolutely can’t exercise during the day, there are things you can do at night instead (or in addition) to help you get to sleep.  Studies have shown that exercises as simple as stretching can help improve insomnia symptoms.  You can try doing stretches or yoga closer to bedtime to help you relax.  You can find books or join a class to learn specific positions and more to promote relaxation and sleep.

While exercise helps you sleep more, it has other wonderful benefits.  Exercise helps you lose weight, feel great, and have more energy during the day (and so will sleep).  Before you try supplements, pills, or other crazy sleep solutions, try working out first.  It will cure your insomnia along with some great positive side effects.

A Balanced Life

Do you live a balanced life or is your life more hectic than ever?

Do you find that you become tired more frequently, lose patience easily, experience moodiness, and are so stressed that you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel? Do you spend less time with your friends than you would like and find that the fun has gone out of your life?  While we tend to think we can do it all, the reality is that we can't.  Many of us repeatedly forego simple pleasures, take on unnecessary burdens and, quite frankly, put other’s needs before our own. This is a recipe for ill-health, depression, and overall sadness.  It’s time to sit down and determine how to live a balanced life.

Performing selfless acts is noble, but it takes a toll we may not be aware of. There is nothing wrong with being selfish. While everyone seems to be concentrating on themselves, you are focusing on them.  The first step to a balanced life is to think about you and your needs.  If you fall apart, you won’t be of any use to anyone.  Selfishness is not defined by an inability to help others; it is the means by which you regenerate yourself by focusing on your own needs.  Simple ordinary pleasures can make a world of difference in your life such as a manicure, a day out with friends or a new outfit.

You’re mental and emotional state has more to do with the balance within than you realize.  Worry drains us; yet we often feel that we can’t seem to control it.  We tolerate many things which essentially drain our energy, leaving us feeling empty and void of feeling.  Sleepless nights ensue, and the cycle begins all over again the next day. Confront the problems head on; let the water out of the tank before it bursts open. Worry about the things you can control.

Protect your space from intruders who are intent on invading your thoughts and inner peace.  If someone is rude or makes a disparaging remark; walk away.  If a situation arises creating angst, deal with it then let it go.  Don’t let it disrupt your life by claiming it as your own. You didn’t create it, nor are you responsible for it.  Try not to solve the ills of the world or place the burden on your shoulders.  You have enough to deal with without placing unimportant needs ahead of your own.

Look in the mirror every morning and acknowledge the unique person you are and know that you deserve to put yourself first also.  Empower yourself to accomplish your most intimate goals and make time for the things that are important to you.

True Friends are good for your health

We all know stress and anxiety are bad for us.  If left unchecked, these emotional problems can have serious physical effects.  We spend millions every year on yoga classes and videos, relaxation tapes, massages, spa visits, and herbal remedies, all in a bid to reduce our stress levels and live healthier lives.  The truth is, there a great and easy remedy for stress relief that costs little no money: go talk to a friend.

For years, scientists have been aware of the fight or flight response.  When we are confronted with a stressful situation, our bodies produce chemicals.  These chemicals induce us to either stand up and fight the situation, or run away.  This is how science has always viewed the situation, till now.  The problem with this theory is that it was based on research experiments using solely male subjects.

Scientists believed that men and women responded the same way to stress; however, recent studies have shown that isn’t true.  When women are confronted with stress, we produce oxytocin, the hormone associated with bonding.  This response probably developed so a woman would protect her family instead of risking her life or abandoning them in a dangerous situation.  Nowadays it means that when women are stressed, we seek out friendship.

The fact that we seek out friendships when we face stressful situations still doesn’t explain why these friendships help women relieve stress.  There are several aspects of friendship that help us lower our stress level.

Help in time of need
We feel more stressed in a situation if we view it as hopeless with no way of escape.  Having a friend there who will do anything for you can make a situation seem less hopeless because we know they’ll always be there to bail us out.

Support
We can feel less stress in our lives if we learn to look at situations positively and cope with them accordingly.  Having a friend there for support and encouragement can help force us to look on the bright side.  A friend can also help us strategize and come up with solutions about how to deal with the situation.

Laughter
A good hard laugh has been shown to lighten our mood, release stress, and give us a more positive outlook on life.    Being around friends can help us smile and laugh, no matter how high our stress level is.

An ear to listen
Sometimes we need to simply vent our frustrations out loud in order to feel better.  We don’t need feedback; we just need someone with an open mind to listen while we rant.  A good friend can provide this kind of support.

So if you want to live a long, healthy, happy life, get on the phone and call up a good friend.  If you can’t call a friend, go out and make a new one.  You’ll definitely be better off for it.
